Bamboo Removal Mid Devon

Our client had two blocks of bamboo that they had planted themseleves a number of years of previously, they had used a gardener for planting who had assured them that by surrounding the newly planted bamboo with slates would contain and stop any spread, this was never going to be the case.

Once planted it is only a matter of time until the bamboo spreads, its not a matter of “if” just “when”, once it has escaped it will be relentless.

The two blocks were in immediate proximity to their house, block paving drive and patio area.

Rhizome and culm growth was visible in both the drive and patio areas, lifting both block paving and patio slabs, this was only going to get significantly worse.

The two photographs above show the minimal above ground signs that the bamboo was now spreading. The patio slab lifting around the drain cover and the small amount of growth coming out from the foundations void where electricity cables enter the property and main sewer pipe exits.

With bamboo very often its not what you can see that matters, its what you can’t see and what you are going to find!

The bamboo was spreading extensively under the house into the cavity wall area, we removed pieces approximately 2000mm long that were rising up into the cavity.

Our prerferred method is physical removal, we can be seen using a micro excavator to make work more efficient and controlled.

Bamboo is often very similar to an iceberg, with far more out of sight than is visible.

On this removal the extent of the bamboo was so significant that approximately 75% of the patio had to be lifted, luckily with this job that was not a particular problem as our clients are planning on replacing it in the medium term future. If this had not been the case then the disturbance would have been a very significant  and expensive problem.

Do Not Let Bamboo Spread, our advice would be to not even have bamboo in your garden, it is invasive, it spreads, and it causes damage.

All possible bamboo was removed, the site left clean and tidy.
We advise that the areas are now left with no planting or groundworks to be constructed, to enable monitoring of the area.
In the unlikely event of any small new growth this can be treated with herbicide.
